Tapping into the Metaverse: What is it, and why now?

We share in this very human activity relative and beautifully diverse experiences that differ from person to person, culture to culture. As we think about the inherent humanness that needs to be protected, enabled, and amplified in the next evolution of the internet, society, businesses, and regulators need to weigh their decisions based on what it means to be human. To create a useful definition of humanness, we analyzed several traits that define us as human beings and distilled them down to four core traits that broadly encapsulate who we are. In our work with Walmart, we found similarly innovative ways to connect with Gen Z and Gen Alpha in the metaverse. The result was Walmart Land, our groundbreaking Web 3 experience with avatars, games, challenges, and more.

There will come a day where developers can give characters personality traits that allow generative AI to take the wheel and create behaviour indistinguishable from the real-life equivalent, but today, it has its limitations. Not to linger too long on Bing’s recent mishap, but current iterations of text-based generative AI could go off on tangents and ultimately, discuss topics outside of the game. In a game like Grand Theft Auto, likely not a huge issue, but for a game like Skyrim, conversations beyond the lore could prove problematic. Ticket holders were able to step inside a version of the series and go on a self-directed interactive tour of the Green Planet with a holographic Sir David Attenborough. It opened up a whole new audience for the series – nearly three quarters of attendees hadn’t watched it on TV.

In June 2022, the restaurant chain Wendy’s expanded its virtual kingdom by launching a new experience called Sunrise City in Meta’s Horizon Worlds VR platform. Entertainment conglomerate Disney was granted a patent for a “virtual world simulator” in December 2021 as part of the company’s plan to develop a virtual theme park. This report looks at the four use case categories in depth, including the types of services application developers are offering, why they need edge computing, and the opportunity for telecoms operators. The focus for this paper is on application developers who primarily serve enterprise markets. However, there is real opportunity and applicability for applications running at the edge in the consumer market as well. In particular, some of the AR/VR applications discussed are currently industry focused but could and will eventually be used by consumers as well.
